Programme and Scope – Dates – Call for Contributions
We look forward to welcoming you to Vienna, celebrated for its cultural richness and recognized as one of the world’s finest hubs of musical excellence, to join us in the CIE’s Midterm Meeting. The CIE Scientific Conference will run from 7th to 9th July 2025, with the CIE General Assembly and other administrative meetings beforehand and the CIE Division and Technical Committee (TC) meetings following (10th to 11th July 2025).
The CIE is the peak global organisation devoted to worldwide cooperation and exchange of information on all matters related to science and the art of light and lighting, colour and vision, photobiology and image technology.
Save the Date
- 13 September, 2024: Final Call for Contributions, Submission opens
- 15 November, 2024: Conference registration opens
- 10 December, 2024: Close of abstract submission
- 01 May, 2025: Early bird registration ends
At the upcoming conference, all six scientific Divisions will convene to explore crucial topics such as the digital age and artificial intelligence’s impact on lighting, controls, and measurement. Discussions will also delve into the application of cone fundamentals in understanding light perception, alongside addressing health benefits and concerns like temporally modulated light and glare sources. Evaluation of virtual reality and augmented reality displays, as well as efforts to minimize obtrusive light and sky glow, will be jointly undertaken, reflecting the CIE’s commitment to global cooperation and innovation in light and lighting technologies.
Why should you visit?
The conference will feature three days of scientific programming, including a special event for young researchers to network and a welcome reception to which all participants of the scientific conference are cordially invited to attend. We will also recognize outstanding contributions with awards for Best Paper, Best Poster, and Best Student Paper. All submitted contributions will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Conference proceedings will be published and submitted for indexing to Scopus.
We will also do our best to ensure a memorable experience, offering a variety of activities from sports (such as badminton) to cultural options and culminating in a Gala Dinner.

Keynote Speakers
We are thrilled to announce that three distinguished speakers have already confirmed their keynote contributions at the Vienna Midterm Meeting.
First, we are honoured to welcome Stephen Westland, Professor of Colour Science and Technology at the School of Design, University of Leeds. With his expertise in colour exploration, particularly in the realms of Colour and AI, Prof. Westland’s insights promise to enrich our discussions on the latest developments in light and lighting.
Second, we are delighted to have Dr. Dietmar Hager join us. As an accomplished Austrian Astro-photographer, Dr. Hager’s work in star photography aligns seamlessly with the conference’s scientific agenda.
Third, we are excited to host Prof. George C. Brainard from the USA, Director of the Light Research Program and Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Brainard’s extensive research has focused on the effects of light on biological and behavioral responses for over forty years. He has authored numerous research articles, book chapters, and standards for the CIE and IES. His presentation will focus on “Light and Human Health,” exploring topics such as phototransduction, melanopsin, circadian rhythms, and the implications for space flight.
Scientific Conference
The three-day scientific conference will be accepting abstracts on the core topics of the CIE, i.e.:
- Vision and Colour
- Physical Measurement of Light and Radiation
- Interior Environment and Lighting Design
- Transportation and Exterior Applications
- Photobiology and Photochemistry
- Image Technology
We also welcome abstracts on associated topics such as:
- Smart lighting;
- Sustainable lighting technologies and practices;
- Integrative lighting for indoors and outdoors;
- Metrology for new technologies; and Image display in augmented and virtual reality modes.
Division and TC meetings
All six of the scientific Divisions of the CIE will meet during the Midterm Meeting and most will hold their Annual Meetings there. The core scientific work of the CIE is done in its Technical Committees (TCs), which produce our standards and technical reports, and many TCs will hold face-to-face meetings in Vienna in the days after the Conference. For people who are new to the CIE and looking to get involved in its scientific work, this is a great way to interact with the leading experts from around the world.
