Good architectural quality, high powered narrow beam spotlights have been fairly elusive to the lighting design industry and to find a useable narrow beam, outdoor rated luminaire with a refined beam angle below 5 degrees has almost been impossible.
This is set to change as UK LED lighting manufacturer Evica Limited have not just developed one architectural quality spotlight in the single figure beam angle category, but two. Starting with the headline grabbing 2.8 degree ES12 pinspot, there is also a 5 degree version. This leads on to a range of wider beams housed in elegantly simple 95mm,12 watts, IP65 rated aluminium casing for outdoor use.
Head of Marketing at Evica, Simon Hepton describes how simple telephone conversation between their lead designer/owner James Fowler and Creative Director, Julie O’Reilly at Sutton Vane Associates lead to the development of the ES12 range of spotlights and wall grazers.
“Julie (O’Reilly) was a little frustrated that there seemed to be the Fresnel lens and LED technology out there to make highly focused, narrow beams when it came to applications such as searchlights and head torches but nothing really for the architectural lighting market.
Whilst their usage could be niche, she was convinced there was a need for a super narrow beam, high output luminaire in a small housing. With this on board we set our sights using some of the Fresnel lens technology from Evica’s searchlight range to create a beam as narrow as 3 degrees as we were fairly sure that a professional, high powered version had not ever been produced commercially.
6 months later and with much trial and error we had produced a working 3 and 6 degree prototype. One of our first ports of call for a demo was the lovely folk at Sutton Vane Associates. I think they were suitably impressed and have specified the 5 degree ES12s on the exterior of a prestigious London art gallery project”
“At last a quality manufacturer is producing a very narrow beam, bright spotlight, with high colour rendering. For years we have been looking for this, thank you Evica!” Julie O’Reilly. Creative Director at Sutton Vane Associates London.
The ES12 is currently available in 5 different beam angles, 2.8º, 5º, 12º, 32º and 60º and in two formats. The ES12s spotlight, which is IP65 rated and comes in track mounted versions as well as a traditional yoke mount. The ES12w wall grazer is the same luminaire body but with a sturdy adjustable wall/column/floor mount to create a precision ‘pinstripe’ narrow beam of light which can extend the height of most building facades. Wider beams can create common wall washes when needed. All these have been designed with minimum glare in mind and also come with optional snoot and honeycomb louvre.
A surface mount and pendant version are in the pipeline to complete this innovative range of ES12 luminaires. They come with optional extras such as extended snoots, honeycomb louvres and protective glass optics on all IP65 models.
Simon continues, “We’ve had an amazing reaction to the prototype models we’ve shown around the London lighting design practices such as WSP, Elektra, Fosters and Partners, Isometrix and of course Sutton Vane. I am excited to get back to London to show off the final production models and hopefully inspire the designers to embrace the usage of more narrow beam luminaires in their work.”
Prices start from £299 + VAT and the ES12 range will be available from 1st March and all product spec info and photometric files are available at http://www.evicalights.com.
