Oslo, Norway, 10 July 2023: Glamox, a world leader in lighting, has won the highest recognition for sustainability in Estonia, receiving a Gold Label in Estonia’s Responsible Business Index 2023. The award recognises the sustainable practices and initiatives of Glamox’s factory in Keila, which manufactures LED lighting fixtures (luminaires) installed in commercial buildings across Europe. Not only are the manufactured luminaires environmentally friendly, but the factory, which only uses renewable energy and has zero waste to landfill, constantly strives to make its operations more sustainable.
“We recognise organisations whose values and actions are shaping the future of entrepreneurship. Additionally, the VEF label helps distinguish companies and organisations amidst greenwashing and other environmental claims, indicating that their commitment to responsible practices has undergone evaluation by ESG experts and earned a quality mark,” said Annika Arras, a Member of the Board of Estonia’s Responsible Business Forum (VEF).
“It’s another milestone on our journey to achieve Net Zero operations by 2030, and I’m delighted that our Estonian team has received recognition for the many successful initiatives it has put in place,” said Astrid Simonsen Joos, Group CEO of the Glamox Group.
Sustainability initiatives include:
- 100% of electricity from renewable sources.
- Zero waste to landfill and increased recycling rate. For example, the factory switched from using plywood to cardboard for transported components. This eliminated around 12 tonnes of plywood waste annually and enables the cardboard to be recycled. Cardboard also reduced CO2 emissions further as it is lighter to transport.
- Switching from virgin aluminium to recycled aluminium, provided a 63% reduction in the emissions of CO2 equivalents for purchased aluminium used in the manufacture of luminaires. By the end of 2023, the majority of profile luminaires sold will be made from recycled aluminium.
- Eliminated plastic bags from packaging and replaced Styrofoam packaging with honeycomb cardboard. By year-end, use of Styrofoam will be reduced by 73% compared to 2022.
- Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Now generating independently verified documents that provide transparent and comparable data, along with other relevant environmental information, about the life-cycle environmental impact of products.
- Carbon footprint reduction initiatives, such as improving pallet utilisation by 40% – effectively reducing emissions while shipping more for less.
- Investment in the community. For example, by supporting Ukrainian refugees and raising money for charitable purposes.
- Stringent health and safety, and proactive diversity, health, and well-being initiatives.
“Sustainability is an intrinsic part of our company strategy and this recognition celebrates the efforts of the entire team. Our focus on sustainability is a priority for us because, in addition to reducing the carbon footprint of our operations, it creates business value and long-term prosperity,” said Virve Jõgeva, Glamox Factory Manager at Keila.
