Natural Materials and Precision Optics: A Visit to L&L Luce&Light at Euroluce 2025
At Euroluce 2025, I caught up with Richard Klapper of Designplan Lighting at the L&L Luce&Light booth. Known for architectural exterior lighting, L&L is now expanding into a new frontier: wood.
A Natural Evolution in Outdoor Lighting
“Most of what they do is exterior,” Richard told me, “but now they’re introducing a whole range of wooden posts.” As wood becomes increasingly popular in fixture design, L&L has embraced the trend using teak—a material known for its resilience in outdoor conditions.
We discussed the practical challenges of maintaining wood outdoors. I asked if the expectation is that a fixture might need refinishing every decade. Richard confirmed that it would, and noted that L&L provides a full maintenance protocol.
L&L’s approach allows for architectural flexibility. While some manufacturers use Accoya—a chemically treated New Zealand fir that’s virtually maintenance-free but limited to one finish—L&L’s teak comes in multiple finishes, offering greater design freedom at the cost of regular upkeep.

Precision Lighting, Engineered for Impact
L&L also introduced a new line of outdoor framing projectors available in three sizes. Each unit becomes IP67-rated when fully assembled. The fixtures come in various wattages, including 2W, 7W, and 20W, and offer the ability to shape and control beams with pinpoint accuracy.

Richard and I spoke about the creative possibilities of indoor framing projection. I mentioned a must-see installation in downtown Milan—Robert Wilson’s “Mother” exhibition, which uses framing projectors to illuminate Michelangelo’s Pietà with breathtaking subtlety. “It’s unbelievable,” I said. “They use just one-tenth of a footcandle, slowly shifting light to tell a story.”
With its growing product range and thoughtful design, L&L Luce&Light continues to demonstrate that exterior lighting can be as expressive and impactful as any architectural element.
