Lucent Lighting’s Obscura65 Awarded GOLD and GREEN at Build Back Better Awards

Lucent Lighting’s Obscura65 Adjustable Downlight has received both a GOLD and GREEN Award at the Build Back Better Awards, recognising its combination of lighting performance, adaptability and considered approach to circular design.

The awards were presented at a special ceremony at Circular Lighting Live at The Minster Building in the City of London, celebrating products and solutions that demonstrate innovation and a commitment to improving the built environment.

For Lucent Lighting, the double award recognises an approach to product development that considers not only how a luminaire performs when first installed, but how it can be maintained, adapted and kept in use over the longer term.

Sustainability and circularity were fundamental considerations in the development of Obscura65. Manufactured using 89% recycled material, with 99% of the product recyclable, the adjustable downlight has been designed with material efficiency and end-of-life in mind.

Importantly, this approach extends beyond material selection. Obscura65 is a modular and maintainable product, with components and LED modules that can be accessed and replaced. This supports repair and future upgrades rather than requiring the complete luminaire to be discarded, helping to extend its useful life, reduce waste and keep materials in use for longer.

Lucie Sidwell, Global Operations Director at Lucent Lighting, said:

“Receiving both GOLD and GREEN recognition for Obscura65 is something we are extremely proud of. From the outset, we wanted to create a product that brought together exceptional lighting performance and visual comfort with a more considered approach to its entire working life.

“For us, circularity isn’t simply about the materials that go into a product. It is also about designing luminaires that can be maintained, repaired and adapted over time, and it is fantastic to see this recognised by the Build Back Better Awards.”

The modular construction of Obscura65 also provides practical benefits throughout installation and ongoing maintenance. Its construction enables straightforward assembly, maintenance and repair, while interchangeable light sources give specifiers greater flexibility should the requirements of a space change over time.

A choice of installation kits enables the same luminaire platform to accommodate different ceiling types and architectural conditions. This can reduce the need for multiple product solutions while helping designers maintain consistency across a lighting scheme.

Alongside its circular design principles, Obscura65 has been developed for demanding low-glare applications, achieving <escape><</escape>10 UGR (very low glare) while providing considerable flexibility in specification.

Compatibility with Lucent’s LED35 and LED51 modules enables performance to be tailored to the application, including the high output of LED51-Q HO, the high efficiency of LED51-Q HE and the extremely low glare of LED35-Q. Warm Dim, Tuneable White and SuperSpot options further extend the range of applications, alongside Lucent’s new Comfort modules for enhanced glare control.

The result is an adaptable architectural lighting solution that brings together performance, visual comfort and circular design. By allowing components to be maintained, repaired and upgraded rather than treating the luminaire as a fixed product, Obscura65 has been designed to respond to changing requirements while reducing unnecessary replacement.

The GOLD and GREEN Build Back Better Awards add to Lucent Lighting’s continued focus on developing high-performance architectural lighting solutions that balance design freedom and visual comfort with responsible product development.
